Online gambling company Betfair says the clock is ticking for 57-year-old Johnson and he could resign as PM at any time. Johnson is facing pressure not only from the opposition but also from within his own Conservative Party in the wake of revelations about a drinks party in Downing Street. The British PM is accused of holding a liquor party in Downing Street during the country’s first Covid-19 lockdown in May 2020.
Rishi Sunak was missing from the House of Commons chamber on Wednesday when Sunak’s boss Johnson apologized “wholeheartedly” for the apparent breach of lockdown guidelines. Sunak, 41, was then hit with allegations that his absence from Parliament was an attempt by Johnson to distance himself from the party’s embattled leader. However, he tried to dismiss the speculations by tweeting on this issue. “I’ve been on tour all day today continuing work on our #PlanForJobs as well as meeting MPs to discuss the energy situation,” Sunak wrote. Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer since February 2020, said, “The Prime Minister was right to apologize and I support his request for patience while Sue Gray (British civil servant) conducts her investigation.”
However, amid pressure, it is being said in the British media that if Boris leaves the post, then Indian industrialist Narayana Murthy’s son-in-law and Britain’s Finance Minister Rishi Sunak can become the PM of the country in his place. Sam Rossbottom of ‘Betfair’ said that Rishi Sunak is most likely to become the Prime Minister in case of Johnson’s departure. Senior civil servant Sue Gray is currently investigating all alleged lockdown breaches within government quarters, including Downing Street. There have been several revelations in recent weeks about similar incidents, which Johnson has tried to justify as work incidents within the premises of his office.
“In terms of replacements, long-time favorite Rishi Sunak still leads the betting at 15/8, with (Foreign Secretary) Liz Truss at 11/4 and (Cabinet minister) Michael Gove at 6/1 as the next two most likely options,” Betfair’s Sam Rosebottom told ‘Wales Online’. Other senior leaders include former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt at 8/1 and Indian-origin Home Secretary Priti Patel, Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Cabinet minister Oliver Dowden at fifth place at 14/1. “The latest betting results suggest the clock is ticking for Boris Johnson,” the company said.
