Recently, senior officials of Israeli security agencies have admitted that the death toll in Gaza could be around 70,000. Till now Israel had been calling these figures wrong, but in a briefing held on January 31, 2026, officials said that the figures of the Gaza Health Ministry are largely correct. However, after the news came in the media, IDF spokesperson Nadav Shoshani issued a statement saying that this leaked information is not official data of the army and the correct information will be released only in the correct manner.
What came out in the data?
According to information revealed during the briefing, the death toll of about 70,000 Palestinians has been estimated. This number is very close to the figure of 71,667 deaths reported by the Gaza Health Ministry. At the same time, 1,71,343 people have also been injured since October 7, 2023. The army had earlier claimed that they had killed about 22,000 fighters, but if we look at the new figures, it becomes clear that a large part of those killed were civilians. Some independent reports also say that 83% of those killed may be civilians.
Ceasefire and current situation
With the help of America, the ceasefire agreement came into effect on October 10, 2025, but even after this the violence has not stopped completely. More than 500 Palestinians have been killed in alleged violations following the ceasefire. The ground situation is still very bad.
About 10,000 people are feared buried under the debris. At least 440 people have died due to hunger and lack of food. This winter, 11 children have lost their lives due to cold. The Gaza Health Ministry reported 4 new deaths and 12 injuries in the past 48 hours.
