LPG gas shortage in India due to crisis in Gulf countries, cylinder becomes costlier by Rs 60

The supply of LPG gas has been most affected due to the ongoing tension in the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf region. According to the report of Times of Oman and International Energy Agency (IEA) dated 13 March 2026, the supply of 1.5 million barrels of gas has been stopped every day through this route. Its biggest impact is on India because India imports 90 percent of its gas requirement through this route.

Impact on cylinder prices and gas supply in India

The Government of India has taken many important steps in view of this crisis. The Petroleum Ministry has officially admitted that there is a delay in the delivery of gas and people have started advance booking of gas out of fear. Due to this, the price of LPG has been increased by Rs 60 per cylinder. The government has implemented the ESMA law on 6 March. Under this, refinery companies have been ordered to make only domestic cooking gas instead of making petrochemicals.

At present, new rules have also been made regarding the supply of gas. Now priority is being given in providing gas to homes, hospitals and fertilizer factories. At the same time, commercial and industrial use has been banned so that common people do not have to face shortage of gas.

Situation in Oman and other Gulf countries

In this entire crisis, Oman’s situation is quite safe compared to other countries. According to rating agencies such as S&P Global and Moody’s, Oman’s main export terminals are Sohar and Duqm outside Hormuz. But supplies to big countries like Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are currently stuck. Qatar Energy and several shipping companies have invoked Force Majeure as threats to waterways have increased. 29 percent of the world’s LPG passes through this route only.

How easy is the option of ordering gas from America?

It takes less than a week for gas to reach India and Asian markets from Gulf countries. Now due to supply stoppage, consideration is being given to importing gas from countries like America. But it takes at least 5 to 6 weeks for the gas to reach India from there. IEA and experts say that there is no bypass pipeline for LPG like crude oil. For this reason, at present there are huge difficulties in improving the supply chain.
