Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki (73), who became the first woman Prime Minister to lead the interim government in Nepal, has a deep connection with Varanasi.
Sushila Karki recently described herself as a ‘friend of India’ in an interview.He received a postgraduate degree from Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
While staying in BHU, Sushila met her spouse Durga Prasad Subedi.
Deepak Malik, former professor of political science in BHU, alively remembered Karki’s stay in the famous university.
Professor Malik told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “Sushila Karki had done a postgraduate in political science from BHU in 1975. At that time, Varanasi was the center of anti-monarchy movement in Nepal for a long time.”He said that Karki was also associated with the same ‘anti -monarchy’ movement.
Writer BP Koirala, who later became the Prime Minister of Nepal, was active in Varanasi at the same time.
Malik said, “BP Koirala was also in Varanasi between 1940 and 1980, and Nepali was working for the Congress, whose base was BHU. Thus Sushila Karki joined the anti -monarchy movement.”
He described the interim Prime Minister of Nepal as ‘a very honest and capable leader’.
The professor said, “Sushila Karki’s election as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister is a big step in the history of Nepal. I congratulate him.”
Malik said that Nepali youth have questioned corruption and economic inequality and need to pay attention to these issues.He said, “The youth dropped the government in Nepal on the issue of corruption and economic inequality.”
Sushila Karki took oath on Friday night and with this she became the first woman Prime Minister to lead the interim government of Nepal.President Ramchandra Paudel administered the oath of office to Karki.
President Paudel said that the new caretaker government led by interim Prime Minister Karki has the right to hold new parliamentary elections within six months.
Chief Justice of Nepal, senior government officials, head of security and members of the diplomatic community attended the swearing -in ceremony of the new Prime Minister.
In a meeting between President Paudel, Nepal Army Chief and representatives of ‘Jane Z’ protesters, Sushila Karki agreed as the head of the interim government.
The youth born between 1997 to 2012 are often known as ‘Jane Z’.
