The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has made a special appeal to all the Muslims of the country. The court has said that efforts should be made to see the moon of Ramzan on the evening of Tuesday, February 17. If the moon is sighted on this day, the holy month of Ramadan will begin from Wednesday, February 18. If the moon is not sighted, the month of Shaban will be considered to be 30 days long and Ramadan will start from Thursday, February 19.

This announcement is very important for millions of expatriates and local citizens living in Saudi Arabia. The Supreme Court has asked people to try to see the moon with their own eyes or with the help of a telescope.
What to do when you see the moon?
The Saudi Supreme Court has given clear instructions that whoever sees the moon on the evening of February 17 should immediately record his testimony. To give testimony, the nearest court or any official center can be contacted. From there they will be sent to the concerned judge or committee.
Special committees have been formed to assist in the moon sighting process. The court has also asked those people who have the experience or ability to see the moon to join these committees. The decision will mainly depend on the reports of Sudair and Tumair observatories.
Why did astronomers issue warning?
This time astronomers have issued a big warning regarding seeing the moon. Experts say that solar eclipse is going to happen on 17th February. Due to this astronomical event the Moon and the Sun will be very close to each other.
The International Astronomical Center has said that it is almost impossible to see the moon this evening. Experts have issued a safety warning that people should not point the telescope directly in the direction of the sun or moon. Due to eclipse, the sun’s rays can damage the eyes and also damage the equipment.
Winter Ramadan and market preparations
This year’s Ramadan is being considered as ‘Winter Ramadan’. This means that the weather will be pleasant in Mecca and Medina and the fasting time will be slightly shorter. The duration of the fast is expected to be around 12.5 to 13 hours.
