Police have arrested two 15-year-old boys in the Brooklyn area of New York. Both of them are accused of having written hate symbols and messages in a playground. Taking this seriously, the police have taken action under hate crime and are investigating the matter.

This incident took place in Gravesend Park, Brooklyn, where vandalism and writing dirty messages came to light twice. The first incident occurred on Monday, 19 January 2026 when around 16 swastikas were drawn with red paint in the park. After this, again on Wednesday, January 21, about 60 swastikas in red, yellow and blue were drawn on the slide, handball court wall and sidewalk.

The NYPD’s 66th Precinct arrested both boys on Thursday, January 22. According to police:
A boy has been charged with aggravated harassment and criminal mischief as a hate crime. The second boy is accused of aggravated harassment.
What did the administration and leaders say
After this incident, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul have strongly condemned it. The Parks Department team had carried out a cleaning campaign on Wednesday itself and painted the walls, after which the children could play in the park again on Thursday. Local leaders have also expressed grief over this incident and appealed to maintain peace in the society.
