The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has once again played a big role during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin met UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed (MBZ) in Moscow and thanked him for his help. It is only due to the efforts of UAE that the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine has been possible, which has brought relief to thousands of families.
How many people have returned home so far?
According to statistics, a total of 17 successful campaigns have been conducted so far with the mediation of UAE. Through these operations, a total of 4,641 prisoners have been freed from the jails of both the countries. This work is being done completely on humanitarian basis.
Recently, in August 2025, a major exchange took place in which 292 people returned to their homes. In this, 146-146 people were released from both the sides. UAE has emerged as a more reliable partner in this matter than Türkiye and Saudi Arabia.
What new developments happened on January 29?
According to the latest report, on January 29, 2026, Ukraine received back the bodies of 1,000 soldiers from Russia. This is a big relief news for the families amidst the war. Abu Dhabi has now become the main center of peace talks, where representatives of America are also reaching for talks.
Putin noted that trade between Russia and the UAE has also now reached 10 billion euros (about $11.1 billion). Apart from this, UAE has also sent help like ambulance and generator to Ukraine.
How does this entire process happen?
A special rule is followed to free the prisoners:
Rule of equality: Often both the countries agree on the principle of ‘1-for-1’.
Method of conversation: UAE officials use “shuttle diplomacy” for this.
Separate Rooms: The people of Russia and Ukraine do not sit face to face, but remain in separate rooms and UAE officials pass messages between them.
