Why was Sheikh Mohammed chosen?
President Ramos-Horta said that the UAE has done very important work in maintaining peace in the world. He said Sheikh Mohamed helped resolve the old feud between Eritrea and Ethiopia. Apart from this, UAE has also quietly played the role of a mediator in the recent talks and exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine.
Ramos-Horta also said that the UAE has opened its coffers to help countries in need. Be it building a school or a hospital, all this has been done without any publicity or branding. UAE has also been at the forefront in providing humanitarian aid to Gaza. For all these reasons, he is being considered a strong contender for the Peace Prize.
