The vote counting process is ongoing and the estimated voting results in the country’s 13th parliamentary elections show that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is leading in 151 constituencies, reports Dhaka Tribune.
According to Dhaka Tribune, BNP has so far won 151 seats in the early morning counting of votes. It also said that early trends indicate that Jamaat-e-Islami will emerge as the main opposition party and win 43 seats.
Despite these early results, the vote counting process is still ongoing and official results have not yet been declared. These preliminary figures indicate a significant change in the political landscape of Bangladesh, with the BNP alliance expected to cross half the majority required to form the government.
BNP President Tariq Rehman has requested to postpone the victory celebrations in honor of the death of his mother Khaleda Zia before the elections. Therefore, he has called for prayers for Khaleda Zia after the Friday congregational prayers.
Unofficial results on Friday showed Tariq Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with a strong lead as counting of votes continued in Bangladesh following Thursday’s historic election.
According to Daily Star, Rehman has been declared unofficially elected from Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency after he won decisively over his nearest rival.
According to the results announced by the office of District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Taufiqur Rahman, counting of votes for 150 polling stations has been completed. There are a total of 151 polling stations including postal ballots in this constituency.
Official results have not yet been released by the Bangladesh Election Commission, which is expected to announce it on Friday.
Bangladesh held its most important elections on Thursday as it tries to enter a new chapter from the classic ‘battle of the begums’ era.
This election looks quite tense after the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the ban on her rival Sheikh Hasina’s party, Awami League.
