Under the new rules, skilled visa applicants will now have to pass a new English language test. The rules related to this examination have been introduced in the British Parliament, which has approved the new rules. These rules will apply to people of all countries including India.
According to reports, it will be mandatory for skilled and student visa applicants to pass a “secure English language test” from January 8, 2026. This test will be conducted by a Home Office approved provider and verified during the visa process. Applicants must now be able to speak, listen, read and write English. To ensure this, applicants must pass the B2-level exam, equivalent to the 12th grade level.
Regarding the new rules, the UK Home Office says that this will help people coming to the UK to easily adapt to life here. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that our country always welcomes those who contribute, but it is not appropriate to come without learning English. Without English people cannot participate in the life of the country. He further said that if someone wants to come to Britain, he or she must learn the language well and pass the prescribed B2-level exam.
The changes are part of May’s ‘Immigration White Paper’, which aims to further tighten the visa system. A British Ministerial Statement (WMS) in Parliament said these exams would increase integration for skilled workers. These changes will affect hundreds of Indian students on graduate route visas. The period for finding a job after studies will be reduced from two years to 18 months, which will be effective from January 1, 2027. However, PhD graduates will get a relaxation of three years. According to Home Office Minister Mike Tapp, statistics show that many graduates do not enter high-level jobs. This change will ensure that they make a fair contribution to the UK economy.
Increased financial requirements for student visa
From the academic year 2025–26, applicants will have to show a monthly income of £1,529 per month instead of £1,483 per month in London and £1,171 per month instead of £1,136 per month in the rest of the UK. This is for self-help. The Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) will also increase by 32%. This tax is paid by UK employers to fund local workforce training. Small or charitable organizations will pay £480 per person per year instead of £364, and medium-large organizations will pay £1,320 per person per year instead of £1,000.

These measures are being said to control immigration. The number of foreign workers and students coming to Britain was increasing, putting pressure on local jobs and services. The government aims to allow only eligible individuals to enter the UK. Thousands of professionals and students in India will be affected by this decision.
