New Delhi, October 23 (IANS). In today’s time, obesity is not just a problem of increasing body weight, but it is a condition that affects overall health. When fat accumulates in excess in the body, it affects the functioning of the heart, digestive system (metabolism) and the energy or vitality of the body.
Due to this, the person quickly feels tired, lethargic and gradually the chances of serious diseases like sugar, blood pressure and heart disease increase.
Obesity is called Sthaulya in Ayurveda. This happens when Kapha dosha increases in the body i.e. the body starts becoming heavy, cold and lethargic. According to Ayurveda, this imbalance occurs due to our wrong eating habits, unstable daily routine and mental stress. Eating late at night, excessive consumption of oily and sweet foods, lack of physical activity and not getting enough sleep are considered to be the main causes of obesity.
Ayurveda does not say to starve or adopt a strict diet to lose weight. Instead it teaches that we should bring balance to our diet and lifestyle. Starting the day with light exercise, yoga or pranayam, eating fresh and light foods and sleeping on time at night keeps the body in balance. Along with this, it is also important to eat slowly, chew properly and eat mindfully. This is called ‘mindful eating’.
Some natural medicines have been mentioned in Ayurvedic texts to reduce obesity. In these, Giloy removes toxic elements from the body and increases immunity. Whereas Guggulu helps in burning fat and improving digestion. Apart from this, Triphala is also a powerful herbal combination, which is beneficial in both digestion and detox.
Ayurveda believes that balance of body and mind is real health. When we align our habits with nature, not only is our weight controlled, but we also feel energetic, light and happy from within.
