Feature-length documentary film “Pipalantri: A Tale of Eco-Feminism” has been officially selected for its world premiere in the Indian Panorama (Non-Feature) section of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa. The film will be shown on INOX 2 on 24 November 2025 at 9:30 am.
Directed by Suraj Kumar and produced by Dr. Garima Singh, the film tells the story of the extraordinary transformation of Piplantri Panchayat in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district, which was once dry, dusty and devastated by marble mining. This same Piplantri Panchayat has now become a lush green paradise and a global model of environmental and gender harmony.
At the center of this revolution is the visionary former Sarpanch of Piplantri, Padmashree Shyam Sundar Paliwal. In memory of his late daughter, he started a unique tradition—planting 111 trees every time a daughter was born. The villagers take care of these trees in the same way they take care of their daughters, symbolizing the bond between life and nature.
Director Suraj Kumar said, “Pipalantri is not just a documentary, it is a living example of how foresight, empathy and community spirit can make this planet healthier. What impressed me most was that the birth of every girl here becomes a celebration of life.”
Suraj Kumar’s feature documentary captures this extraordinary journey with sensitivity, restraint and emotional depth. “Pipalantri’s story has given us hope today that we are fully capable of reversing global warming trends,” says Kumar. “But the main challenge is to be fully committed to this work, taking inspiration from Padmashree Shyam Sundar Paliwal.”
Talking about the importance of being selected for the India Panorama section, he adds, “The only way forward for independent filmmakers is through film festivals. We just need an opportunity to shed light on important topics that move us. IFFI, with its India Panorama section, is playing a big role in supporting independent cinema in India.”
Producer Dr. Garima Singh said, “The film celebrates the women of Piplantri and their deep connection with nature. Their story is a symbol of resilience and renewal. The selection at IFFI is an acknowledgment of the power of local stories to inspire global dialogues.”
