We have been hearing since childhood that drinking plenty of water keeps the body healthy and the kidneys clean. The elders in the house have always said that drinking plenty of water prevents diseases. But is it true? The truth is that water is important, but it does not mean that the more water you drink, the stronger your kidneys will be. Many times people drink too much water not intentionally, but out of compulsion or fear. This does not provide any benefit, rather it puts more pressure on the body. Kidneys need water, but drinking too much water increases their workload and can upset the body’s balance. Therefore, it is important to understand how much water the kidneys actually need and which are myths from our grandparents’ time.

Why is water important for kidneys?
Kidneys are an important organ that cleans the blood. They remove excess salt and impurities from the body and maintain the balance of water and minerals. When the water level in the body is sufficient, the kidneys are able to function comfortably. However, this does not mean that the more water you drink, the better your kidneys will work. Kidneys need water, but only to a certain extent.

Drinking too much water is not always beneficial
Many people think that drinking plenty of water throughout the day will prevent kidney disease. However, doctors and research show that drinking more water alone does not guarantee protection from chronic kidney disease. Drinking too much water puts unnecessary pressure on the kidneys. It can also be dangerous for some people, especially those whose kidneys are already weak. Drinking too much water can be harmful if sodium levels in the body become too low, causing hyponatremia, which can cause dizziness, fatigue, or lightheadedness.

How much water should one drink?
The amount of water each person needs depends on his age, body type, weather and work schedule. There is no rule that everyone should drink 4 or 5 liters of water. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day is considered sufficient for a healthy person. If the weather is very hot or you do a lot of physical exertion, the need may increase slightly. The best way is to understand your body’s signals and drink water accordingly.

How to know if you are drinking the right amount of water?
It is not difficult to find out whether your body is getting enough water or not. If your urine is light yellow, it means you are adequately hydrated. If its color becomes dark yellow or very dark, it is a sign of lack of water. It is best to drink water in small amounts throughout the day. Drinking too much water at once puts stress on the kidneys, so drinking water slowly and often is the best approach.

Not only water, lifestyle also affects kidneys

Drinking water alone is not enough to keep kidneys healthy. Our diet, salt intake, blood pressure, sugar levels and physical activities also directly affect kidney health. High blood pressure or diabetes can quickly affect kidney health. Therefore, a balanced diet, low salt intake, less processed foods and regular checkups are important for kidney health.

It is clear that water is very important for kidney health, but the belief that the more water you drink, the better it will be, is wrong. Drinking water slowly, in moderation throughout the day provides the most relief to the kidneys. Maintaining a healthy body is the key to staying healthy. Along with drinking enough water, healthy habits are equally important for kidney health.
