CP Radhakrishnan took the oath of Vice President on Friday. CP Radhakrishnan has become the 15th Vice President of the country. President Draupadi Murmu Radhakrishnan was sworn in as Vice President at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteers, the beginning of political innings from Jana Sangh in adolescence, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, Chandrapuram Ponusamy Radhakrishnan, popularly known as ‘Modi’ of Tamil Nadu among supporters, have a rich political and administrative experience as the 15th Vice President of the country.
His journey as Vice President will now be different, in which he will also have many challenges. The biggest challenge will be to balance the ruling and the opposition as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, as in the last few years the opposition has raised many questions about the fairness of the posture.
Radhakrishnan (67) was sworn in by President Draupadi Murmu on Friday as the 15th Vice President of the country. He is handling this responsibility in place of his predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who suddenly resigned, citing health reasons on 21 July.
Radhakrishnan will be the third leader of Tamil Nadu to hold this post. He gave the opposition candidate B.C. in the Vice Presidential election on Tuesday. Sudarshan Reddy defeated by a huge margin of 152 votes.
On being elected Vice President, his mother Janaki Ammal narrated a story related to his name Radhakrishnan. He told reporters in Tamil Nadu, “The President was Radhakrishnan when my son was born. He was a teacher and I was also a teacher. In his honor, I named my son Radhakrishnan. Then my husband looked at me and said that you are giving this name to your son because you want to see him becoming President one day? What my husband said, after 62 years, that thing proved to be true. ”
In his first public remarks after winning the election on Tuesday, Radhakrishnan said, “The other party (opposition coalition) said that this (election) is an ideological battle, but the voting pattern makes us feel that the nationalist ideology has won.” He said, “This is the victory of every Indian, we all have to work together. If we have to create a developed India by 2047, then we have to focus on development. ”
Till now Radhakrishnan, who is playing the role of the Governor of Maharashtra, joined the RSS and Jana Sangh during his teenage age. He won the Lok Sabha elections twice from Coimbatore in the late 1990s and his supporters call him ‘Modi of Tamil Nadu’.
Radhakrishnan won the election twice from the Coimbatore Lok Sabha seat in 1998 and 1999, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. However, after this he suffered three consecutive defeats from this seat. He has a lot of respect in all parties in Tamil Nadu and that is why the BJP made him the Governor of many states. He was sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra on 31 July 2024. Earlier, he served as the Governor of Jharkhand for about one and a half years. While holding the post of Governor of Jharkhand, he was also given additional charge of Telangana Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
Even after assuming the post of Governor in various states, he has often visited Tamil Nadu. During his recent tour of Tamil Nadu, he participated in several programs and Chief Minister M.K. Also met Stalin.
Assembly elections are due in Tamil Nadu next year.
Born on 20 October 1957 in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan has a bachelor’s degree in business management. Radhakrishnan, who started the RSS volunteer at the age of 16, became a member of the state executive of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1974.
In the year 1996, Radhakrishnan was appointed as Secretary of BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Coimbatore in 1998 and in 1999 he was again elected to the Lok Sabha from this seat.
During his tenure as an MP, he served as the chairman and member of various parliamentary committees.
Between 2004 and 2007, Radhakrishnan was the president of the Tamil Nadu unit of BJP. While in this post, he performed the 19,000 km ‘Rath Yatra’, which lasted for 93 days.
An enthusiastic player Radhakrishnan has been a college champion and long -range runner in table tennis.
It is said that he had an important role in creating a new alliance for the BJP in Tamil Nadu after DMK ended his relationship with the NDA in 2004.
