New Delhi, December 16 (IANS). Bone marrow, called the ‘silent hero’ of the body, is the spongy tissue present inside the bones, which not only produces blood cells but also provides nutrition and strength to the bones. It has immense importance in both modern medicine and Ayurveda.
The health of the bone marrow is often responsible for anemia, weak immunity or bone weakness. There are two types of bone marrow, red marrow and yellow marrow. Red marrow makes red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. At the same time, yellow marrow mainly stores fat, but also helps in blood formation by converting into red marrow when needed.
Bone marrow produces more than 50 billion new blood cells per day, provides the foundation of the immune system, and heals bleeding in emergencies. In childhood all bones have red marrow, which changes to yellow as they age. Many researches have been done on this and it shows that bone marrow can also affect brain inflammation and will become the basis of stem cell therapy in the future.
If the bone marrow does not get nutrition, it may have to face a lot of problems. These include diseases like aplastic anemia, leukemia (blood cancer), myelofibrosis and thalassemia. Bone marrow becomes weak due to deficiency of vitamin B12, iron or folate.
To prevent bone marrow from becoming weak, you can take Ayurvedic medicines. In Ayurveda, bone marrow has been called Madja Dhatu, which provides nutrients inside the bones.
According to Charaka Samhita, the increase of Vata dosha and lack of nutrition are the reasons for its weakening. To keep the marrow healthy, consumption of Giloy, Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Pomegranate, Beetroot, Ghee and milk is considered best. These medicines increase immunity, help in blood formation and strengthen bones.
Experts recommend that a balanced diet and Ayurvedic medicines keep the bone marrow healthy, which will make the bones strong and the body energetic. In case of any problem, consultation with a doctor is necessary.
