Nepal. Nepal is going through the upheaval these days due to the Jane ji movement and protests. The situation has become even more tense after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation. Meanwhile, protesters have chosen former Chief Justice of Nepal Sushila Karki as the interim Prime Minister.
73 -year -old Sushila Karki was sworn in as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal late Friday evening. Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel administered him the oath of Prime Minister.
Sushila Karki was born on 7 June 1952 in Biratnagar, Nepal. He received his early education from here and earned a bachelor’s degree from Birtnagar in 1972. He then turned to India and completed his postgraduate studies in political science from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1975.
Karki has always been emotional about the association with India. She says that her home is just 25 miles from the Indo-Nepal border. In childhood, she regularly used to go to the border market.
In 1978, Sushila Karki completed law studies from Tribhuvan University. The next year he started advocacy in Baratnagar. In 1985, she was also an assistant teacher at Mahendra Multiple Campus at Dharan.
The significant turn of his career came in 2009 when he was appointed a temporary judge in the Nepal Supreme Court. A year later, in 2010, she became a permanent judge. His hard work, honesty and fearless image gave him a different identity in the judiciary.
In 2016, she became the acting Chief Justice and took over as the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal from 11 July 2016 to 6 June 2017. This achievement was considered historic not only for them, but also for the judicial system of Nepal.
However, his tenure was not untouched by controversies. In April 2017, the then government brought impeachment motion against him in Parliament. He was accused of bias and intervention in the functioning of the government. As soon as the proposal came, he was suspended from the post. But this incident further strengthened his image. The public raised his voice in support of the independence of the judiciary and the Supreme Court stopped Parliament from further action. Due to increasing pressure, Parliament had to withdraw the proposal in a few weeks. The entire episode established Sushila Karki as a fearless judge who does not bow down to the pressure of power.
Today, when Nepal is going through a deep political crisis, Sushila Karki has been given the responsibility of handling the country.
