New Delhi, December 24 (IANS). The cold weather of winter i.e. from December to mid-February is challenging for the body. At this time, cold winds blow and the body needs more warmth and energy than normal days. In such a situation, it becomes very important to take care of proper eating habits and daily routine. Ayurveda tells what to do and what not to do during winter season.

The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India shares Ayurvedic tips to stay healthy in winter season and explains in detail what to do and what not to do.

Ayurveda says that in winter season, there are simple measures like eating food on time, drinking lukewarm water, protecting the body from cold and doing light exercise or yoga, which strengthen the immunity and keep the body active.

Some special habits should be adopted to keep the body warm and nutritious during winter season. First of all pay attention to diet. Eat sweet, sour and salty tasting food. These give energy to the body and help in fighting cold. Eat plenty of milk and milk products like ghee, curd, cheese etc. These are nutritious and increase body heat. Use honey, preferably with lukewarm water. It improves digestion and increases immunity.

Eat heavy but nutritious diet in winter season like porridge, khichdi, dry fruits and jaggery based items. During this period, massage with oil daily. Mustard or sesame oil massage keeps the body warm, prevents joint pain and softens the skin. To protect yourself from cold during the season, wear warm clothes, keep the room closed and cover your mouth and nose while going out. Along with this, physical exercise is important. Do light walking, yoga or pranayam in the morning. This keeps the body active and improves blood circulation. Along with this, bathing with hot water or taking steam is also beneficial. It prevents respiratory problems and gives relaxation to the body.

However, some things can cause harm in this season, so these should be avoided. Do not eat spicy, bitter or constipation-causing food, such as excessive chillies and spices, stale food or light salads. These spoil digestion and increase cold. Do not fast at all, because the body needs energy continuously. Avoid drinking cold water in this season. Always use lukewarm or hot water. Cold water reduces body heat and increases the risk of cold and cough.

Do not stay in cold windy environment for too long in winter season. Do not roam outside in the cold without protection and avoid sleeping in the open at night. With these simple measures the problems occurring in winter season can be overcome.
