An 82-year-old man in West Bengal allegedly died by jumping in front of a moving train just hours before he was to attend a hearing related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Police gave this information on Tuesday.
Police said that the elderly man had to appear for the hearing of the SIR issued in Purulia district of West Bengal.
Kanai, son of the deceased, said his 82-year-old father Durjan Manjhi was worried after receiving the notice for the SIR hearing as his name was not in the draft voter list.
Police said that Manjhi died after being hit by a train on Monday. He was asked to appear for hearing at the office of Block Development Officer (BDO) of Para.
Kanai, a daily wage labourer, said, “My father had submitted the SIR enumeration form, but his name was not in the draft voter list. His name was in the voter list of 2002.
He said that he could not understand why his father was called for hearing. He claimed that he was worried ever since he received the hearing notice on December 25.
Incidentally, the Election Commission on Monday issued an order stating that voters aged 85 years and above as well as sick or disabled persons cannot be called for personal hearing unless a specific request is made by them or on their behalf.
