New Delhi, June 4 (IANS). Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Thursday announced that it will launch two new models from its Chennai manufacturing plant this year, including its first mass-market electric vehicle, as part of its efforts to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India and strengthen localization.
The company said it is committed to establishing Tamil Nadu as its leading electric vehicle hub for India, which it will support over the next two to three years by investing in manufacturing capabilities, localization of key components and expansion of charging infrastructure across key cities and highways.
The company further said that a strategically distributed network of high capacity chargers will be developed across major urban and transit corridors to promote affordable electric vehicles in the country.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg said the company will launch two new models from the Chennai-based plant within this year, including its first exclusively mass-market electric vehicle (EV).
He further said that this move is an important step towards accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in India and building a strong EV ecosystem.
Garg also said that along with localization of EV manufacturing, the company is also focusing on workforce development to ensure availability of skilled talent for future mobility technologies.
The company said it has exported more than 39 lakh vehicles manufactured in Tamil Nadu to more than 150 countries, highlighting the state’s importance in the global manufacturing network.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd also informed that it has set up Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains and is actively localizing power electronics and other critical components as part of its EV strategy.
