New Delhi . The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against two more accused in the 2024 Independence Day IED recovery case of Assam. This charge sheet was filed in the special court of NIA located in Guwahati. After this action, the total number of accused in the charge sheet of this case has now become five. Earlier, NIA had filed a charge sheet against three other accused in June 2025. The names of the two new accused who have been included in the charge sheet by the NIA are Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi. Both are residents of Dibrugarh district of Assam. NIA had arrested both of them in June 2025. They have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Explosive Substances Act and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. NIA investigation has revealed that Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi had provided funds for terrorist activities. This money was given to the accused Jahnu Bora who was already included in the charge sheet. Jahnu Bora had admitted during interrogation that he himself had planted four of the 11 IEDs seized by the police in August 2024.
According to the investigating agency, these IEDs were planted as part of the protests in Assam and the call to boycott Independence Day. This call was made by Paresh Barua, Chief of banned terrorist organization ULFA (I). Through these IEDs, a conspiracy was hatched to spread terror in the state and create an atmosphere against the government.
Assam Police had initiated this case. Earlier this case was registered at Dispur Police Station. The allegation in the case was that ULFA (I) had planned to carry out several IED blasts in different areas of Assam as part of a conspiracy to wage war against the Indian government. Later in September 2024, this case was handed over to NIA, after which the agency started its in-depth investigation.
At present, the NIA investigation is going on and more revelations are expected in the coming days.
