New Delhi, January 15 (IANS). As the temperature falls in winter, people’s hunger also increases. They start feeling hungry again and again and to satisfy that hunger they resort to salty, biscuits or fried things.
All these things affect our health, but there is a ‘superfood’ hidden in the treasury of Ayurveda which is not only filling but also full of properties. We are talking about sweet potatoes. Sweet potato is an easily available option in winter, which can be eaten anytime.
Some people eat sweet potatoes by boiling them, but boiling them in water reduces the properties of sweet potatoes and the taste also becomes dull. At the same time, roasted sweet potatoes are not only delicious but also medicinal for health. In winter, I feel hungry even at night and don’t know what to eat. In such a situation, roasted sweet potatoes are the best option. Roasting sweet potatoes increases the Agni element in it which helps in balancing Vata. In winter, Vata increases rapidly in the body and in such a situation, roasted sweet potatoes help in balancing Vata.
The roasting process converts the complex starches of sweet potatoes into natural sugars, making them easier to digest at night, so they can be a great option to stave off winter hunger.
Laziness and lethargy is a common problem in winter. In such a situation, consuming roasted sweet potatoes at night supplies vitamin B6 and magnesium, which produces ‘serotonin’ hormone in the brain and helps in controlling mood, sleep, appetite and emotions. It is also helpful in providing relief from stress.
Roasted sweet potatoes increase the amount of beta-carotene, which is essential for eye health. In winter, there are often complaints of dryness, watering and redness in the eyes. Roasted sweet potatoes will help in getting rid of all these problems.
Now the question is how and when can roasted sweet potatoes be consumed. According to Ayurveda, roasted sweet potatoes can be eaten by adding spices. For example, eating black cumin mixed with lemon, cumin powder and dry ginger will provide relief from cold and phlegm. Sweet potatoes can be taken for evening breakfast or dinner. However, keep in mind that eat it 2-3 hours before sleeping. If there is no problem of cough then roasted sweet potatoes can be consumed with milk at night.
