Indian-American doctor Nisha Verma is making headlines these days on social media and international media. Dr. Nisha Verma, a gynecologist who practices in Massachusetts and Georgia, recently appeared before the US Senate Committee as a Democratic witness during a debate on abortion. However, the debate heated up when Republican Congressman Josh Hawley asked her a strange question: “Can men get pregnant?”
The Republican congressman asked, “Can men get pregnant?”
During her testimony before the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee, Dr Nisha Verma did not answer the question directly, repeatedly saying she did not understand the purpose of the question. Congressman Hawley repeatedly said that she simply wanted to prove biological truth and answer yes or no to the question of whether men can have children.
Despite being asked questions repeatedly, he did not give a direct answer.
Despite repeated requests from the Congressman, Dr. Nisha Verma focused on medical evidence and patient safety instead of getting involved in political fights. He did not directly answer whether men can get pregnant. He made it clear that abortion is a difficult medical procedure and it should be seen in the light of evidence rather than ideological disputes.
Sen. Hawley: “Can men get pregnant?”
Dr. Nisha Verma: “I’m not really sure what the goal of the question is.”
Sen. Hawley: “The goal is just to establish a biological reality…Can men get pregnant?”

Politics of Abortion Drugs: Disadvantages
During a Senate hearing, Dr. Nisha Verma warned lawmakers that politically motivated bans on abortion medications are harming patients. He cited data showing that abortion drugs like mifepristone have been extensively studied for decades and have been used safely by more than 7.5 million people in the United States since 2000. More than 100 high-level peer-reviewed studies have shown these drugs to be safe and effective. He said that to prevent criminal misuse of abortion drugs, access to treatment should not be blocked for those who need it.
