The governing organization of CBSE has approved the plan of two examinations for class 10 students. In a meeting held in the last week of June, the Supreme decision -making organization of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to implement the scheme of two board examinations for class 10 students from 2026. The purpose of this improvement is to improve the performance of students by increasing educational flexibility and reducing the tension related to examination. Under this new scheme, it will be mandatory for all students to appear in the first board examination to be held in mid -February.

These students will get a chance to take second exam

Students who will pass the board examination to be held in February and will complete the eligibility to appear in the second examination, they can improve their marks by joining maximum three subjects from science, mathematics, social science and language in the second examination to be held in May.

These students will not be considered eligible for the second exam

Students who fail in three subjects in the first examination will not be eligible for the second exam and will be placed in the “compulsory repetition” category. For this, they will have to take the exam again next year. Students with compartment results can also take another examination under the compartment category.

Internal assessment will be done before the main examination
Special provisions have been made to ensure equal access and flexibility for sports students, students with school going students in winter and candidates with special needs. The internal assessment will be done once before the main examination, and the course of both exams will cover the entire academic year. The results of the first examination will be announced in April, while the results of the second examination will be released in June. Students can use the results of their first exam for final admission to eleventh grade, and the final confirmation will be based on the results of the second exam. Eligibility certificates will be provided only after the second examination.

Students will get additional opportunity
This two-examination system is designed to provide students an additional opportunity to improve their marks, promote continuous learning and reduce the pressure associated with the same high-day examination. The governing body of CBSE approved this progressive decision in June 2025, which is an important step in the implementation of NEP-2020 guidelines in India’s secondary education system.
