Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took over as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal and became the first woman Prime Minister of the Himalayan country.
Karki took charge at the Singh Darbar on Sunday, which symbolizes a significant political change for Nepal after several days of violent protests.
The 73 -year -old former Chief Justice of Nepal took oath as an interim Prime Minister on Friday after a comprehensive generation Z -protests caused by political deadlock, corruption and disappointment arising out of economic inequality due to the ban on social media platforms in the country.
Following the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli following extensive protests, the protesters collectively supported his name for the interim post citing his honesty and freedom, after which he was appointed as an interim Prime Minister.
Karki’s selection symbolizes a rare moment of consensus in Nepal’s politics. The generations on the online platform discord were elected through a public vote organized by Z leaders, she emerged as the most popular and acceptable person not only among the youth movement, but also among the traditional political forces seeking stability and reliability in the time of the upheaval.
Meanwhile, according to the report by The Kathmandu Post, Karki has started consultation with close advisors and prominent personalities of the generation Z movement to prepare to finalize his cabinet.
According to Kathmandu Post, Karki will begin intensive discussion for the formation of her cabinet on Sunday morning, quoting one of her colleagues. Despite having authority over all 25 ministries, he is allegedly committed to creating a well -organized cabinet with more than 15 ministers, in line with the demands of the protest movement led by Civil Society and Generation Z.
According to the report of Kathmandu Post, the names being considered for ministerial posts include legal expert Om Prakash Aryal, former Army Officer Balanand Sharma, retired judge Anand Mohan Bhattarai, Madhav Sundar Khadka, Aseem Man Singh Basanya and Energy experts Kulman Ghizing.
From the medical field, prominent persons like Dr. Bhagwan Koirala, Dr. Sanduk Ruit, Dr. Jagdish Aggarwal and Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha are also under consideration.
Meanwhile, members of the Generation Z are consulting parallel, including discussions on platforms such as discords, to recommend potential candidates to suit their reformist agenda. According to the report of the Kathmandu Post, if a consensus is formed, the cabinet can be sworn in by Sunday evening, although it can be avoided till Monday based on the result of the discussion.
On Friday, Nepal’s Parliament was formally dissolved and new elections were held on 5 March 2026. This took place a few hours after former Karki took oath as the new interim Prime Minister of the country.
Announcing the decision, the President’s Office said that the disintegration was approved in the first cabinet meeting convened by Karki at 11 pm (local time), which led to a six -month transitional government, whose job is to take the country to elections.
