New Delhi, February 8 (IANS). According to a statement issued by the IT Ministry on Sunday, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has achieved a major milestone under its ongoing mission-mode campaign. UIDAI has completed the mandatory biometric updates (MBU) of more than 1 crore school children studying in 83,000 schools across the country.

UIDAI had started this special MBU campaign in September 2025. This campaign was made possible after technical integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) app. With this, the status of biometric updates of children in schools could be easily known and those children whose updates were pending could be identified.

With the help of this technical facility, UIDAI and schools jointly identified those children for whom MBU was required. After this, special camps were organized in schools, where biometric updating of children was completed.

While making Aadhaar for a child below 5 years of age, only photo, name, date of birth, gender, address and birth certificate are taken. At this age, children’s fingerprints and iris are not fully developed, so they are not recorded.

When the child crosses 5 years and 15 years of age, it is necessary to update fingerprint and iris in Aadhaar. If this is not done, then there may be problems while availing the benefits of government schemes or registering for examinations like NEET, JEE, CUET.

To motivate children for biometric updates, UIDAI had waived the fee for one year from October 1, 2025 for children aged 7 to 15 years. Additionally, MBU is already free for children aged 5-7 years and 15-17 years.

Apart from schools, children can also get their MBU done by visiting Aadhaar Enrollment Centers and Aadhaar Seva Kendras across the country. During this period, approximately 1.3 crore biometric updates were completed at such centres.

UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar wrote a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all the states and union territories informing them about this campaign and sought their cooperation in organizing MBU camps in schools.

8 regional offices of UIDAI located across the country have completed this massive campaign in collaboration with the Education Department, District Administration, School Management and UIDAI Registrar in the last 5 months. This mission-mode campaign will continue until all the schools in the country are covered.
