Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on his 78th death anniversary and said his emphasis on ‘swadeshi’ was the “foundational pillar of self-reliant India”.
Prime Minister Modi wrote on Twitter, “My hundredfold tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his death anniversary. Pujya Bapu always laid emphasis on Swadeshi, which is a fundamental pillar of our resolve for a developed and self-reliant India. His personality and deeds will always inspire the countrymen to follow the path of duty.”
In another post, the Prime Minister praised Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of non-violence.
He wrote, “Pujya Bapu always emphasized on non-violence for the protection of humanity. It has the power that can change the world without weapons. Ahimsa param dharmasta-tahimsa parantpah, ahimsa paramam satyam yato dharmah pravartate (Non-violence is the ultimate duty, non-violence is the ultimate penance, non-violence is the ultimate truth and it leads to the path of dharma).”
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary, remembering the values for which he stood.

He further said that the hatred that separated the country from Bapu could be countered only by following the path of Gandhi.
He wrote, “The same hatred that separated us from Bapu, the only cure for it lies in Bapu’s own path – the light of truth, the power of non-violence and the compassion of love. Tribute to the Father of the Nation on Martyrs’ Day.”
Meanwhile, President Draupadi Murmu also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on his death anniversary.
Senior Minister JP Nadda also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and said, “On the sacred death anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, a worshiper of humanity, a symbol of sacrifice and penance, a promoter of Swadeshi and self-reliance, I pay millions of homage to him. Pujya Bapu spread the message of truth, non-violence, peace and goodwill across the world through his ideal and exemplary personality and actions. His great thoughts are still relevant today in building a self-reliant and developed India. He guides the countrymen. His philosophy of life dedicated to the service of the nation will always inspire us to follow the path of morality, tolerance and public service.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a leading figure of India’s independence movement, died of gunshot wounds on January 30, 2026. He was murdered by Nathuram Godse when he was going for his daily prayers.
30 January is celebrated as Martyr’s Day. On the occasion of his 78th death anniversary, the Central Government will organize all-faith prayers and Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Rajghat in the national capital in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister and Rajghat Samadhi Committee Chairman Manohar Lal.

Meanwhile, Delhi Traffic Police has issued a traffic alert in view of an official program to be organized at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at Rajghat on January 30 to commemorate Martyr’s Day. Many dignitaries are expected to attend the event, due to which there have been major changes in security arrangements and traffic rules in some parts of Central Delhi.
As per the advisory, traffic diversions may be implemented as required at major intersections including ITO Chowk, Delhi Gate, Guru Nanak Chowk, Shantivan Chowk, Rajghat DTC Depot and IP flyover.
