Wayanad, February 28 (IANS). Four villages were washed away in the natural disaster that occurred in Kerala on July 30, 2024, in which more than 200 people died and many went missing. The government has created a model township in Wayanad to provide new houses to the affected families. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate it on Sunday.
32 people are still missing in this tragedy. There was huge damage to properties also. The Wayanad Model Township, built for the rehabilitation of disaster victims, is spread over 49 hectares. An investment of Rs 299 crore has been made in this township being built on land acquired under the Disaster Management Act. After legal action, the land was purchased for Rs 44.33 crore.
178 houses have been completed in the first phase. The model house was completed in just 105 days. Built to be flood and earthquake proof, each 1,000-square-foot house comprises two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living and dining areas, study room, kitchen, work area and sit-out.
The homes are fully electrified, with three-phase wiring, BLDC fans, LED lighting and future installation of air conditioning and inverter systems.
This township is not limited to just residential facilities. It has 11.42 km long internal roads, bridges, underground power lines, drainage network, decentralized sewage treatment plant, one lakh liter water storage system, CCTV surveillance and solid waste management facility.
Every house has a two kilowatt rooftop solar plant under net metering, which is one of the largest residential solar clusters in Wayanad. After its construction, public facilities like community centre, health centre, Anganwadi, market, open theatre, entertainment venue and football ground will also be provided.
