New Delhi, March 9 (IANS). Before the upcoming assembly elections, Monday was a very important day for Assam Congress. Former national finance secretary of Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) Jayant Khaund has joined the Congress party along with several other leaders.
Jayant Khaund was formally inducted into the Congress at the party headquarters in New Delhi. Many senior leaders including Assam in-charge and AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh Alwar, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress observer for Assam DK Shivakumar, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi and National Secretary Manoj Chauhan were present on the occasion.
Welcoming Khaund into the party, Gaurav Gogoi said that the joining of a grassroots leader like him into the party reflects the growing public discontent in Assam against the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said that many leaders of the ruling camp are feeling suffocated under the present leadership as the Chief Minister is promoting corrupt elements while sidelining active and honest workers.
Gogoi said Khaund’s decision to join the Congress is a sign of growing political change in Assam.
Attacking the BJP, Assam Congress in-charge Jitendra Singh said the party’s strategy is to weaken regional identity and gradually eliminate regional parties. Citing the examples of Odisha and Bihar, Singh said the BJP first forms alliances and later tries to eliminate its allies politically.
He said similar efforts were being made in Assam to weaken the AGP and Khaund’s joining the Congress would strengthen the struggle to protect the culture and values of Assam.
