Senior JDU leader KC Tyagi has distanced himself from the party. He announced this personally by issuing a formal letter on Tuesday (March 17, 2026). His first reaction to this situation has now come out, in which he has clarified the reasons behind leaving JD(U). Speaking to PTI, KC Tyagi said, “We have been together for 50 years… This time, when the party’s membership drive was going on, I did not renew my membership… However, our personal relations are still the same.”
Responding to a question, KC Tyagi announced that on March 22, he intends to meet his colleagues and well-wishers at Mavalankar Hall in Delhi. He further said that further announcements regarding their future plan of action would be made on the same day. Tyagi commented, “There has been no bitterness in our relations… In fact, Nitish Kumar was the last remaining leader of the socialist movement. Now he is moving out of Bihar politics to the national stage in Delhi. Moreover, the number of our old allies has also reduced… As a result, there is very little scope left for me to play the kind of positive and active role within the party (JD(U)) that I used to play earlier. Now I also want to be active in the politics of Uttar Pradesh.” Tyagi further said, “We have done politics together—first during Jai Prakash ji’s movement, then within the Janata Party-Lok Dal, and then under the leadership of Karpoori ji. I have not tendered any formal resignation; rather, I simply decided not to take part in the party’s membership renewal drive.”
Had demanded ‘Bharat Ratna’ for Nitish Kumar
It is worth noting that KC Tyagi was a long-time member of JD(U). Just a few months ago, he had publicly demanded that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar be honored with the ‘Bharat Ratna’—India’s highest civilian honour. At that time, the party’s national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan had clearly stated that even the party’s own leaders and workers were unsure whether KC Tyagi was still a member of the JD(U). Now, in a way, KC Tyagi has really chosen a different path for herself.
