Amravati. Taking an important decision on Thursday, the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved the proposal to grant legal sanctity to Amaravati as the state capital. This proposal will be presented in the special session of the Assembly on March 28. In the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, it was decided that this proposal will be discussed in the Assembly for about four hours. Through this proposal, the Central Government will be requested to officially declare Amaravati as the capital of the state by amending Section 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014.
The Cabinet has also decided that the word ‘Amaravati’ will be added in place of ‘New State Capital’ in the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) Act.
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has already demanded the Center to give legal status to Amaravati. The central government had asked the state to pass a resolution in this regard in the Assembly, so that any technical or legal complications can be avoided in future.
According to the information, after the proposal is passed by the Assembly, the Cabinet of the Central Government will give its final approval to it and there is a possibility of declaring Amravati as the official capital in the current session of the Parliament.
The farmers who gave their land for Amaravati have also been demanding for a long time to give it legal status.
It is noteworthy that in 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of Amravati. However, after the YSR Congress government came to power in 2019, the capital project was stopped and the proposal of three capitals came forward.
The process of developing Amaravati as the capital again has been expedited after the Telugu Desam Party-led government comes to power in 2024.
