New Delhi, April 5 (IANS). Pregnancy is a very special time in every woman’s life, but the changes taking place in the body during this period also bring many problems. One of these common problems is indigestion, heaviness in the stomach and loss of appetite.
Actually, due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, the digestion process slows down, due to which problems like gas, acidity and nausea increase. Both Ayurveda and science believe that these problems can be reduced to a great extent through diet and some natural remedies.
In Ayurveda, fennel is considered very beneficial for digestion. The natural oil and fiber present in fennel relax the stomach muscles and reduce the problem of gas formation. Fennel has anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties, which help in reducing stomach cramps and heaviness. When fennel is boiled in water and drunk, its elements dissolve more easily in the body and calms the digestive system. This is the reason why taking some fennel after eating makes the stomach feel light and the problem of indigestion can be reduced.
Ginger is also considered very effective for nausea and indigestion during pregnancy. Ginger has been called a great medicine in Ayurveda because it strengthens the digestive fire. According to science, elements like gingerol and shogaol are found in ginger, which balance the acid produced in the stomach and provide relief from the feeling of vomiting. When lemon is mixed with ginger, it becomes more effective. Lemon contains vitamin C and natural acids, which activate digestive juices and help digest food quickly. Taking this mixture with lukewarm water keeps the stomach light and appetite also starts increasing gradually.
Coconut water is also considered very beneficial during this period. According to Ayurveda, it cools the body and balances Pitta dosha, which increases during pregnancy and causes acidity. Coconut water contains electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, which keep the body hydrated and soothe stomach irritation. When the body remains hydrated, the digestive process also works better and the problem of indigestion is reduced. Drinking fresh coconut water regularly also maintains energy in the body.
