The Government of India has declared April 14, 2026 (Tuesday) as a public holiday on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. This decision has been taken as per a notification issued under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. On this day, all central government offices and industrial establishments will remain closed across the country.

What is the significance of Ambedkar Jayanti?

Ambedkar Jayanti (also known as Bhim Jayanti) is celebrated every year on 14 April to commemorate Dr. B.R. It is celebrated as Ambedkar’s birth anniversary. He was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, a social reformer and a strong supporter of equality and social justice. This day is also celebrated as ‘Equality Day’.

Banks will remain closed on 14th April

According to the holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India, banks will remain closed in most of the states of the country on April 14. Many regional festivals are also celebrated on this day, such as:

great equinox solstice

Bisu/Biju festival

tamil new year

bohag bihu

Banking services will be affected in many cities of the country on these occasions.

Online banking services will remain operational

Although bank branches will remain closed, digital services will continue to function.

UPI, NEFT, RTGS and internet banking will be available 24×7

There will be no interruption in online transactions

Bill payment, fund transfer and online shopping can be done easily

Stock market will also remain closed

On April 14, all segments including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed. These include:

equity

equity derivatives

currency derivatives

commodity derivatives

This will be the last trading holiday of April 2026.

When will banks be closed this week?

April 15–16: Regional New Year (in some states)

20 April: Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya (Karnataka)

RTGS leave

Account closure (usually April 1)
