Dahod, April 21 (IANS). The Gujarat government has sought a detailed report from district authorities following a mass illness linked to a wedding ceremony in Dahod. Hundreds of people have been affected by the disease and as of Tuesday, 34 people were still hospitalized.
State Health Minister Prafulla Pansheriya said the incident occurred at a private function on Monday evening and confirmed that the affected people were being treated in government hospitals.
He told IANS that the incident happened at a private function last evening. The affected patients are being treated in the civil hospital. I have asked for a detailed report from the district administration. The report will be submitted in a day or two.
Health officials said so far 184 people have been discharged after treatment, while others with mild symptoms were treated at local hospitals and primary health centres.
Giving details of the incident, Dr. Rajeev Damor, Resident Medical Officer of Zydus Hospital, Dahod, said that about 200 guests had attended the wedding ceremony.
He said there was a wedding ceremony in Dahod yesterday evening, which was attended by around 200 people. Those seriously affected with stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting were referred to Zydus Hospital.
Doctors said that immediately after eating food at the event, patients started reporting symptoms like stomach ache, diarrhea and vomiting, due to which large-scale medical assistance was initiated.
As the number of cases increased, many people were taken to hospitals in ambulances and private vehicles.
Dahod’s Epidemic Officer Dr Nayan Joshi confirmed that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has joined the investigation.
He said FSSAI officials are currently present at the spot and are assisting the state authorities in collecting samples. The results of the investigation will be shared soon.
Officials have collected samples of food items from the wedding venue for laboratory analysis to find out the cause of the suspected food poisoning.
Earlier reports said the number of affected people has reached hundreds, with many of them requiring admission and emergency care at various hospitals in the district.
There is no news of any death and the condition of most of the patients is said to be stable.
