Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha has criticized the Supreme Court’s directive regarding sending dogs from Delhi-NCR to some other place, calling it disappointing.
Sonakshi wrote on Instagram, “Day by day we are showing how callous we have become as a society. Every day is disappointing.” He wrote, “Stray dogs are not a problem. They are victims. Victims of fear, hunger, disease, neglect, cruelty, and abandonment. They live without shelter, unvaccinated, unsterilized. Give birth to babies on the streets, and watch their children face similar conditions.”
He said sending dogs to overcrowded shelters would cause them to lose their freedom. This is not animal welfare. The only real and humane solution is sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs.
Many celebrities including Vir Das, Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Varun Grover have criticized this directive. John Abraham has also written a letter addressed to the Supreme Court and Delhi Government.
Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan’s bench said in its decision that the problem of rabies, especially in children, due to the bite of stray dogs is ‘extremely serious’. The court has directed Delhi authorities to start the work of setting up a shelter for about 5,000 dogs in six to eight weeks.
