Although direct signs of a second round of talks between Iran and the US are not immediately visible, efforts towards a peace agreement continue through back-channel diplomacy. Amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, Tehran has sent a new peace proposal to the US, which aims to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the conflict. Citing a US official and two sources familiar with the matter, Axios reported on Sunday that Iran—through Pakistani intermediaries—has sent the US a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end hostilities; Notably, the resolution defers nuclear talks to a later stage.
Iran ready to reopen Strait of Hormuz – report
According to Axios report, the new peace proposal sent by Iran to the US mainly includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a new conditionality regarding nuclear talks, and measures ranging from a ceasefire to lifting the economic blockade. According to reports, Iran is ready to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Under the terms of the proposal, an agreement could be reached to extend the ceasefire for a longer period or end the conflict permanently.
Iran’s new condition for nuclear talks
Iran’s proposal suggests that nuclear talks be postponed for now and resumed at a later stage. Iran says nuclear talks will begin only when waterways reopen and the economic blockade is completely lifted. Meanwhile, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Araghchi clarified to mediators that there is no consensus within the Iranian leadership on President Trump’s demands regarding enriched uranium. According to sources, the White House has already received this proposal. However, at this time it is not clear whether the US administration is willing to consider these conditions set by Iran. If the Strait of Hormuz reopens, it could provide significant relief to global oil supplies.
