New Delhi, May 1 (IANS). On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, along with the rights and respect of workers, emphasis is also being laid on the protection of their health. There is a need to take special precautions regarding safety today for the workers who are vulnerable to the increasing scorching heat and heat wave in many parts of the country.

The country progresses only through the hard work of hardworking hands. Therefore, protecting their health is a big responsibility. Labor Day is a reminder that every working person has the right to work in a safe and healthy environment. In this season of rising temperatures, laborers working in the open, construction workers, farmers working in the fields and people working on the roadside are being affected the most.

According to the National Health Mission, lack of protection from heat waves and heat waves can have a serious impact on the health of workers. There are necessary precautions for workers in heat wave, by paying attention to which they can be saved from the heat. For this, stay in the shade as much as possible while working. If it is necessary to work in the sun, cover your head well with a cap, towel or cloth. Keep drinking adequate amount of water throughout the day. Drink water in small sips before you feel thirsty.

Also, avoid soft drinks, cold drinks and energy drinks with high sugar content. Due to these, dehydration in the body can increase rapidly. Wear light colored, loose and cotton clothes which can absorb sweat and keep the body cool. Do not work in direct sunlight continuously. Take rest of 10-15 minutes every 45-60 minutes. Eat light and easily digestible food. Heavy, fried or spicy food can further overheat the body.

Experts say that due to heat stroke, symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, high fever, unconsciousness can be seen. In such a situation, one should immediately take the body to the shade and wipe the body with cold water and seek help from a doctor. Industry organizations and trade unions should rationalize working hours during the summer season, ensure provision of shade and drinking water and make workers aware.
