According to a report in *The Economic Times*, America’s low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has decided to temporarily cancel all its flights due to the pressure of rising fuel prices. The company said that due to the sudden rise in crude oil prices in the international market, the operational costs have increased significantly, due to which it is no longer economically profitable to operate flights at the current fare rates.

Commenting on the decision, Dave Davis, President and CEO of Spirit Airlines, said, “For more than 30 years, Spirit Airlines has played a vital role in making travel accessible and connecting people, while also ensuring affordable fares throughout the industry.” He further explained that although they had prepared a restructuring plan during a meeting held with their bondholders in March 2026, the sudden and steep increase in fuel prices had necessitated the decision to cancel the flights.
**Know the refund process**
For the convenience of passengers, the airline has announced that passengers who had purchased tickets directly using credit or debit cards will automatically get a refund. Those who booked tickets through travel agents will need to contact their respective agents to get a refund. Meanwhile, refunds or compensation for bookings made using vouchers, credits or loyalty points will be decided at a later stage during the insolvency proceedings. It is worth noting that, after reports of increase in fuel prices came yesterday, Air India has also canceled 100 of its daily flights. This decision has been taken due to the increasing cost of fuel. As a result, advisories are being issued to avoid inconvenience to passengers.
