Starting today, messages you send on Instagram will no longer be private. In fact, Instagram is discontinuing end-to-end encryption starting today. Why was this feature discontinued?
In 2019, Meta announced its intention to bring end-to-end encryption to both Facebook and Instagram. Then, in 2023, this feature was introduced for Facebook Messenger. In December 2023, it was also launched as an optional feature on Instagram. Now, less than three years later, Meta has changed its decision. The company says that this feature is being discontinued because very few users were actually using it.
So, will chatting no longer be safe?
With end-to-end encryption turned off, Instagram chats will now rely solely on standard encryption. This means that, if necessary, Internet service providers (ISPs) can access the content of your messages. This system is currently used in many online services including Gmail. Now, apart from the sender and recipient, the company itself will also be able to access your chat conversations. As a result, chatting on this platform will no longer be as secure as before. In addition to potential third-party access, if data is compromised at the server level, your chat history could end up in the wrong hands. Therefore, it is now advised to exercise more caution and discretion while chatting on Instagram.
Will it now become easier to hack Instagram accounts?
Turning off end-to-end encryption will have no impact on the overall security of your Instagram account. This feature primarily impacts the *privacy* of your conversations, not the security of your account login credentials. Turning off this feature does not affect the security of your device, the Instagram login system, two-factor authentication, or password strength. Therefore, disabling this feature does not increase the risk of hacking.
