Kolkata, May 12 (IANS). Two policemen have been suspended for attacking a BJP candidate in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Government officials gave this information on Tuesday.
These police officers are Inspector-in-charge Samar Dey and Sub-Inspector Sukumar Ruidas of Baruipur police station in South 24 Parganas district.
According to the allegation, on May 5, the police beat up Biswajit Pal, BJP candidate from Baruipur West assembly constituency. Both these policemen were involved in this incident.
In the video that went viral on social media, Inspector-in-charge of Baruipur police station Samar Dey and several other policemen are seen assaulting the BJP candidate and taking him away in a vehicle.
The BJP claimed that the incident took place in the afternoon. At that time, Trinamool Congress (TMC) had alleged that its party office was being vandalized in different areas of Baruipur West assembly constituency during the post-poll violence in the state.
According to the local people, after receiving the complaint of vandalism, the Inspector-in-Charge of Baruipur Police Station and other police officers had reached the spot.
The BJP candidate alleged that the police beat him up without any provocation as soon as they saw him on the road. He also alleged that not only was he assaulted, but a false case was also registered against him.
Biswajeet had lodged a written complaint with the police in this matter. Based on this complaint, the state police started investigation, after which disciplinary action was taken against the Inspector-in-Charge and Sub-Inspector of Baruipur police station. After this both the police officers were suspended.
BJP has won power by defeating the Trinamool Congress government. Trinamool Congress had ruled the state for the last 15 years. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has become the Chief Minister of West Bengal. On Monday, the Chief Minister held his first cabinet meeting at the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ and later chaired a meeting with top police officials of the state.
