New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA R. Will hear a petition filed by Srinivas Sethupathi. In this petition, the interim order of the Madras High Court has been challenged, in which he was barred from participating in the floor test in the Tamil Nadu Assembly amid the ongoing controversy over his victory from Tirupattur Assembly constituency by just one vote. According to information available on the official website of the Supreme Court, the petition of MLA Srinivas Sethupathi has been listed for hearing on Wednesday before a bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and Vijay Bishnoi. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi had requested for an urgent hearing on this petition before Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Tuesday, after which the Supreme Court agreed to list the matter for hearing on Wednesday.
This whole matter is about victory and defeat by one vote in Tirupattur assembly constituency in the recent assembly elections. TVK’s R. Srinivas Sethupathi defeated former Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader K.R. Defeated Periyakruppan. According to official figures from the Election Commission of India, Sethupathi received 83,365 votes, while Periakaruppan received 83,364 votes.
After the election results, the DMK leader moved the Madras High Court alleging serious irregularities in the counting process. Periakaruppan claimed that a postal ballot sent for Tirupattur Assembly Constituency No. 185 in Sivagangai district was mistakenly sent to Tirupattur Assembly Constituency No. 50 in Vellore district and was rejected there instead of being sent back to the correct Assembly Constituency.
After this, the High Court, in its interim order, barred Srinivas Sethupathi from taking part in important processes of the Assembly. At present, Srinivas Sethupathi has challenged the interim order passed by the vacation bench of Madras High Court in the Supreme Court, which will be heard on Wednesday.
