8 posts vacant in Information Commission
According to available information, this meeting was held to select the new Chief Information Commissioner of the country. At present, 8 posts including the post of Chief Information Commissioner are vacant in the Central Information Commission (CIC). Till a few months ago, Hiralal Samaria was the Chief Information Commissioner of India, but the post is vacant after Samaria’s retirement on 13 September 2025. The selection committee of Central Information Commission members includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Under Section 12(3) of the Right to Information Act, the Prime Minister heads a committee, also including the Leader of the Opposition and a Union Minister nominated by the Prime Minister, which selects and recommends names for the appointment of the Chief Information Commissioner and Information Commissioners. As per the RTI Act, the CIC consists of a Chief Information Commissioner and 10 Information Commissioners, who decide complaints and appeals filed by RTI applicants against unsatisfactory orders of government officials on their applications. According to the CIC website, it has 30,838 cases pending with it. It currently has only two information commissioners, Anandi Ramalingam and Vinod Kumar Tiwari, and eight posts are vacant. Hiralal Samaria was the last Chief Information Commissioner, who left the post on September 13 after completing 65 years of age. He was appointed the Chief Information Commissioner on November 6, 2023.
