India is ready to achieve a major milestone in Kashmir and Ladakh. Zojila Tunnel, one of the country’s largest projects to ensure all-weather road connectivity between these areas, is set to reach a milestone on June 9. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will attend the foundation stone laying ceremony of the tunnel that day. This achievement is not only considered a marvel of engineering but also an important step towards strengthening the country’s connectivity and national security. This big achievement of India near the ‘Line of Actual Control’ (LAC) will become a problem for China and Pakistan.
This approximately 13.15 kilometer long tunnel is being built at a height of about 11,500 feet above sea level. The “breakthrough blast” signals the completion of the most difficult phase of the tunnel’s construction. Once completed, this project will ensure year-round connectivity between Kashmir Valley, Kargil and Ladakh. It will also be the world’s longest single-tube, two-way road tunnel.
Currently, Zojila Pass remains closed for several months every year due to heavy snowfall, disrupting road connectivity with Ladakh. The tunnel will provide great relief from this problem. Local people, tourists, traders and those supplying essential goods will directly benefit. Travel time will be reduced and economic activities will increase in the area.
Road closures due to snowfall often cause major disruptions in the movement of army personnel, logistics and equipment. The Zojila Tunnel has been an extremely challenging project; Upon completion, it will ensure uninterrupted connectivity throughout the year for both the common people and the armed forces.
Local people are very excited about this project. A local resident said that he has been hearing about the Zojila Tunnel since his childhood and believes that its completion will greatly benefit the common people. He said that due to road closure, it was often difficult to reach Srinagar for treatment, but now such difficulties will be reduced considerably. According to transport expert Abhijeet Sinha, Zojila Tunnel is important mainly because of its strategic importance. This project is considered important for the rapid movement of army and security forces in Ladakh, located near the borders of China and Pakistan. Once this tunnel is ready, it will be possible to supply troops, weapons, fuel and other essential military equipment throughout the year. With this, resources can be quickly delivered to the soldiers deployed in the border areas and the operational capability of the army will be strengthened.
Zojila Tunnel is being considered as the new lifeline of Ladakh. Its completion will not only maintain road connectivity throughout the year, but will also give new impetus to tourism, trade and regional development. The success achieved on June 9 is being considered a historic step in this direction.
