Chennai, June 7 (IANS). The political clash between the ruling Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) and the opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has intensified ahead of the upcoming local body elections in Tamil Nadu. Leaders of both the parties are making sharp attacks on each other and making open challenges regarding the election results.

The controversy started with allegations that Greater Chennai Corporation Mayor Priya insulted TVK MLA Pallavi during a public event recently. This matter soon turned into a major political controversy and allegations and counter-allegations started between senior leaders of both the parties.

State Public Works Department Minister Adhav Arjun launched a scathing attack on the DMK leadership, alleging that the party has insulted the democratically elected public representative.

He said that TVK has been exercising restraint till now, but will not tolerate insult to its MLAs. Challenging the DMK leadership and Udhayanidhi Stalin, he claimed that the DMK would face a crushing defeat in the local body elections.

Aadhav Arjuna said that DMK will not be successful in winning even a single mayor’s post in the municipal corporations of the state. Referring to Chennai, he said that it would be difficult for the party to maintain its influence and it may have to face an embarrassing situation in the elections.

On the minister’s statement, DMK’s organization secretary R.S. Bharti immediately counterattacked. He rejected the challenge of Aadhav Arjun and raised questions on his political stature.

Bharti said that Aadhav Arjun’s status is not such that he can meet DMK President M.K. Challenge Stalin or senior leader Udhayanidhi Stalin.

Citing the political history of Tamil Nadu, he said that in the 1984 assembly elections, the then Chief Minister M.G. The AIADMK was dominant under Ramachandran, but in the 1986 local body elections the DMK alliance won most of the municipalities.

He said the results of local body elections are often different from assembly elections and the DMK is confident that whenever the elections are held, the party will put up a strong performance.

During this time R.S. Bharti said that if TVK succeeds in winning even one mayoral post in the elections, he will shave a part of his moustache. This increasing war of words between the two parties is clearly indicating that political activities are about to reach its peak before the local body elections in Tamil Nadu.
