FIFA World Cup 2010: When the 2006 World Cup in Germany ended, it seemed as if football was bidding farewell to an entire era. Zidane was gone. Names like Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Figo, Beckham were at the last stage of their careers. But the game never leaves an empty space. When one generation leaves, another is taking shape at the same time. Between 2006 and 2010, two young players rose rapidly in club football. One was playing for Barcelona while the other for Manchester United and then Real Madrid. The style was different. The personalities were different but the skills of both were extraordinary. The names were – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. By the time he reached South Africa, he had become the biggest star in the world but the World Cup was still an incomplete story for him.

When the World Cup reached Africa for the first time

The 2010 World Cup was history in itself. For the first time it was being played on African soil. It was not just a sporting event but the acceptance of an entire continent. For decades, Africa had given the world the best players but the biggest stage had never come to its soil. It became a matter of pride for the entire continent for South Africa to host the event. The tournament’s official song “Waka Waka”, sung by Shakira, became a worldwide hit.

This event also had a deep political meaning. South Africa had suffered decades of apartheid and after coming to democracy under the leadership of Nelson Mandela, the country was forming its new identity. During the final, 91-year-old Mandela, despite his poor health, came to the field in a wheelchair and the whole world stood and welcomed him. This was one of his last public appearances.

The shrill sound of thousands of “vuvuzelas” at the opening ceremony showed that this World Cup would not be the same. There was also a lot of controversy regarding Adidas’s “Jabulani” ball. It was criticized by both goalkeepers and strikers for its unexpected change of direction in the air.

Spain: not a team of stars, but a thought

There was a long list of contenders in the tournament. Brazil has Kaka, Argentina has Messi and coach Maradona, Portugal has Ronaldo, Germany has the new generation. But Spain was considered to be the most balanced team. Uruguay also did wonders. Star striker Diego Forlan stunned everyone with magical long-range goals and won the “Golden Ball” of the tournament.

Spain not only had good players but a philosophy. Control the ball, let the opponent run, play short passes, find spaces, and strike as soon as you get the chance. The world named it “Tiki-Taka”. Xavi, Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, David Vea, Puyol, Casillas, this team was not a collection of stars but a well-organized machine.

Still, it started with a shock. Switzerland defeated them 1–0. The world was shocked. It seemed the same old story would be repeated again. Building a great team and failing in the World Cup. But this Spain was different, did not panic, slowly got back into rhythm and then continued winning.

Argentina and Portugal: The talent was there, but the team was not complete

The journey to Argentina was interesting. Coach Maradona’s passion and Messi’s skill made the team attractive but Messi was not able to score goals. Creating chances, running the game, but he was not able to make the decisive impact that was expected.

They faced Germany in the quarter-finals and produced one of the most explosive performances in football, thrashing Argentina 4–0. Messi was disappointed, Maradona stunned. Argentina’s journey is over.

Portugal also did not perform as expected. Ronaldo was skilled but the team was not strong enough to win the World Cup. It was proved once again that the greatness of an individual player does not equal the greatness of the team.

Suarez’s hand and Ghana’s broken dream

In this period, the match between Ghana and Uruguay became the most dramatic match in football history. In the last seconds, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez stopped the ball with his hand on the goal line, received a red card, but Ghana missed a penalty. Africa’s dream of reaching the semi-finals for the first time was shattered there.

Germany’s new generation, and the beginning of goal-line technology

Germany had an amazing game in the knockout round, beating England, then crushing Argentina. Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller, Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, this young team was showing a glimpse of the future. Frank Lampard’s clean goal in the match against England was disallowed by the referee, a major mistake that forced FIFA to introduce “goal-line technology”.

But Spain defeated Germany in the semi-finals, with Puyol’s header sending Spain into the final for the first time. In the other semi-final, the Netherlands defeated Uruguay. The final was set, Spain versus the Netherlands, two teams that had never won a World Cup before.

The final: tension, yellow cards, and Iniesta’s magic

11 July 2010, Soccer City Stadium, Johannesburg. The whole of Africa was watching with bated breath. The Netherlands adopted a physical game, Spain kept the ball. Referee Howard Webb had to show a record 14 yellow cards and one red card. Nigel de Jong’s kick to the chest of Xabi Alonso is still considered the most violent foul in finals history. Goalkeeper Iker Casillas saved a goal from Arjen Robben with his foot.

No goals scored, regular time over, extra time started, a penalty shootout looking increasingly likely. Then in the 116th minute that moment came, Fabregas got the ball, Iniesta stepped forward, shot, goal. The whole stadium echoed, Spain ahead 1-0. After the goal, Iniesta held up the jersey to remember his late friend Dani Jarque, with the inscription on the inside of the shirt saying, “Dani Jarque is always with us.”

Spain’s golden age at its peak

A few minutes later the final whistle blew, Spain became champions for the first time. This was not just the victory of a match, it was the victory of a thought, the result of years of planning and collective understanding. Spain won the Euros in 2008, now the 2010 World Cup, and would go on to win the Euros in 2012, a consistency that very few national teams have achieved.

what was going to happen next

The 2010 World Cup is special for many reasons, Africa’s first World Cup, the pinnacle of Spain’s golden era, and the opening chapter of the Messi-Ronaldo World Cup journey. It was also a sign of a new world in which club superstars had to prove themselves again on the national team stage.

But the next World Cup was going to be even more dramatic. The World Cup returns to Brazil, to football’s most passionate country. Neymar would emerge, Germany would field one of its greatest ever teams, and the world would witness a semi-final no one imagined, a score that football history would never forget.
