Due to the continuously increasing prices of petrol and diesel in the Indian market and the rapidly expanding charging network, Indian customers are now increasingly turning towards electric vehicles.
India’s electric car market has grown with great growth in May 2026. Domestic automakers grabbed the top spots in terms of sales, while Tata Motors continued to be the company that sold the most electric cars. According to the government’s vehicle portal, a total of 25,880 electric cars were registered in May 2026.
This figure is 80.7 percent more than the 14,323 units recorded in May 2025. At the same time, an increase of 4.6 percent was recorded in sales as against 24,753 units in April 2026. Tata Motors sold 10,339 electric cars in May 2026 and achieved 39.9 percent market share. The company’s sales increased by 103.4 percent year-on-year and 11.1 percent month-on-month.
Mahindra stood second, selling 6,210 units and gaining 24 percent market share. The company’s sales increased by 98.3 percent compared to May 2025 and 5.9 percent compared to April 2026. At third place was JSW MG Motor, which manufactures India’s best-selling electric car MG Windsor. The company sold 4,985 electric cars in May 2026. Its sales increased by 8.4 percent year-on-year, although sales were down 19.3 percent compared to April 2026.

Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki, with only one electric model e Vitara, stood at the fourth position. The company recorded sales of 1,591 units in May 2026 and achieved 6.1 percent market share. Its sales registered an increase of 19.5 percent compared to April 2026.
New entrant VinFast was at fifth position. The company sold 1,238 electric cars in May 2026 and achieved 4.8 percent market share. However, its sales declined by 4 percent compared to April 2026. BYD sold 686 electric cars in May 2026 and achieved 2.7 percent market share. The Chinese company’s sales increased by 10.5 percent year-on-year and 23.8 percent month-on-month.
At the same time, Hyundai sold 460 electric cars in May 2026. The company’s sales declined by 36 percent year-on-year and 17.7 percent month-on-month. Its market share was 1.8 percent. Kia sold 349 electric cars and gained 1.3 percent market share. The company’s sales increased by a whopping 751.2 percent year-on-year, although sales were down 13.4 percent compared to April 2026. At the bottom was Citroen, which sold only 22 electric cars in May 2026. Its market share was only 0.1 percent. The company’s sales declined by 82.9 percent year-on-year and 26.7 percent month-on-month.
