Chennai, June 8 (IANS). The politics of Tamil Nadu has heated up regarding the arrest of YouTuber Maridhas. BJP has strongly criticized this action and termed it an attack on freedom of expression.
BJP Mahila Morcha national president and former Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan on Monday condemned the arrest of Maridhas, alleging that the state’s ruling TVK government was attempting to suppress critical voices and crush democratic dissent.
Maridhas was arrested by the police from his residence in Madurai. He is accused of posting videos targeting Chief Minister Vijay, several ministers and ruling party MLAs. Ruling party leaders claim that the YouTuber made defamatory comments against government leaders using artificial intelligence (AI) generated content.
After the arrest, BJP accused the state government of limiting freedom of expression. In a statement released on social media, Vanathi Srinivasan described the action as “extremely condemnable”, saying it reflected intolerance towards criticism of the government.
He alleged that Maridhas was arrested only for raising questions and criticizing the functioning of the TVK government. Describing the government as “Reels Model Government”, he said that in a democracy, it is the fundamental right of every citizen to expose the shortcomings and mistakes of the government.
Vanati said resorting to police action and arrests to silence critics is a direct attack on freedom of expression and democratic values. According to him, in a democratic system governments should always be open to criticism and public review.
The BJP leader alleged that the present government was adopting the same methods which were once criticized by the opposition parties during the previous DMK regime. He said that in the past also there had been incidents of pressure and arrests against people and social media critics who exposed the alleged failures of the government and now the same atmosphere seems to be forming again.
He said that no government should try to suppress critical and dissenting voices by force. If there is any criticism, it should be responded to with facts, clarification and dialogue.
Vanathi Srinivasan said, “Criticism should not be answered with arrests, but with reason and accountability.”
The political conflict between the ruling TVK and opposition parties in Tamil Nadu is likely to intensify after the arrest of Maridhas. Freedom of expression, criticism on social media and the role of law enforcement agencies may now become major debate topics in the state’s politics.
