Jaipur. The architect of modern Indian statistics, Prof. On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prashant Chandra Mahalanobis, the 20th State Level Statistics Day was celebrated by the Statistics Department at the Constitutional Club, Jaipur on Monday. The theme of Statistics Day this year was ‘Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data’. The program included a comprehensive presentation on scientific use of administrative data, data-based policy making, digital governance and the role of statistics in strengthening good governance. In the program, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. Premchand Bairwa said that Prof. was instrumental in providing a strong base to the statistical system of independent India. P.C. Mahalanobis’s contribution has been historic. The National Sample Survey and other statistical frameworks developed by him have given a new direction to the country’s development plans and policy making. He said that in today’s digital era, data is not just a collection of data but an invaluable asset for good governance, transparency and effective decision making. Scientific analysis of administrative data available in every field like education, health, agriculture, industry and social welfare is becoming the basis for better implementation of public welfare schemes. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is rapidly moving towards data-based governance and the Rajasthan government is also continuously working towards effective use of administrative data by strengthening the digital platforms and information systems of various departments. He said that the budget announcement for the year 2026-27 and initiatives like CM-PRAMAN will provide new impetus to integration of data of various departments, advanced analysis and evidence-based policy making. He called upon the officers to actively contribute towards the goal of Developed Rajasthan@2047 by ensuring quality, reliability, confidentiality and timely collection of data.
Dr. Ravi Kumar Surpur, Government Secretary, Planning and Statistics Department, said that statistics has today become the most effective medium for evidence-based policy making, service delivery and strategic planning. He said that Prof. P.C. The Indian statistical tradition established by Mahalanobis has given a new direction to the scientific analysis of social, economic, agricultural, employment and consumption data.
He said that the state government is continuously strengthening policy making on the basis of quality and reliable data. The governance system is being made more accountable and result oriented through effective use of administrative data, uniformity in data of different departments and modern data analytics.
Director of the Department of Economics and Statistics and Joint Secretary to the Government said that Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis made an important contribution in determining the direction of development of the country through socio-economic planning, five-year plans and sample survey method. He said that the department is successfully conducting important works like state gross domestic product, district domestic product, inflation rate, industrial production index, monitoring of sustainable development goals and census.
Earlier in the program, Dr. Payal Seth, Lead Economist of India Foundation, gave a presentation on the topic ‘Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data’. He said that effective use of administrative data, data analytics and artificial intelligence based analysis is very important to achieve the goal of Developed India@2047 and Developed Rajasthan@2047.
At the ceremony, Dr. Premchand Bairwa released Rajasthan Statistical Year Book-2026 and Rajasthan Sustainable Development Goals Status Report-2026. For their excellent and notable contribution in the field of statistics, 15 officers and employees including Joint Secretary, Finance (Budget) Krishna Sharma, Joint Director Ranveer Singh, ACP Sunil Kumar Chaudhary, Deputy Director Ajit Singh, Assistant Director Virendra Singh, Statistics Officer Devendra Kumar Bairwa were awarded the State Level Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis Statistics Prize awarded.
In the ceremony Prof. P.C. A documentary based on the life of Mahalanobis, his scientific contributions and the development of the Indian Statistical System and a short film based on the achievements and activities of the Department of Economics and Statistics were also screened. On this occasion, senior officials of the Economics and Statistics Department, representatives of various departments, academicians, subject experts and departmental personnel were present.
