Kolkata . On the second day of the two-day orientation program organized for the newly elected members of the West Bengal Assembly, Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs said that this will give the public representatives an opportunity to better understand the functioning of the Assembly and play an effective role. BJP MLA Rajesh Kumar said that such a program was only expected for a long time. He told that many senior MLAs also believe that such a training program has never been organized before, in which the MLAs are taught how they can make a meaningful contribution in the proceedings of the Assembly as an effective public representative. According to him, such training will be helpful in further strengthening democratic institutions. BJP MLA Dipanjan Guha also praised the program and said that the learning process should continue. Giving an example, he said that just as the puja utensils retain their shine only if they are cleaned regularly, similarly it is necessary for the public representatives to learn continuously. He said that being a first-time MLA, he still has a lot to learn and this program is an important step in that direction.
BJP MLA Roopa Ganguly said that such orientation programs are organized regularly in Parliament and there are prescribed rules for them. He said that he has received information that such a program is being organized for the first time in the West Bengal Assembly, which will make the functioning of the House more systematic and effective. He said that it was because of the struggle of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee that West Bengal remained a part of India. He demanded that Dr. Mukherjee’s statue should be installed in the state.
On the controversy over occupation of TMC building by opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee’s group, BJP MLA Bhaskar Bhattacharya said that this is their internal matter and the public is watching everything. He said that only the concerned people will have to answer on this.
On the orientation programme, Bhaskar Bhattacharya said that this is a welcome initiative. According to him, to serve the public it is not enough to just win elections, but it is also important to learn how to speak in the Assembly, how to participate in the proceedings and how to follow parliamentary traditions. He expressed confidence that despite ideological differences, such training will further improve the efficiency of the Assembly.
