Guwahati, July 5 (IANS). The internal crisis in Assam Congress deepened on Sunday, when a letter signed by two party MLAs came to light. In this, disciplinary action has been demanded against Assam Youth Congress President and Algapur-Katlichera MLA Zubair Majumdar. It is alleged that he behaved inappropriately during the meeting chaired by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi.
The letter is signed by Laharighat MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar and Guwahati West MLA Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar. This letter has been addressed to the Indian Youth Congress President.
The MLAs alleged that the review meeting held at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on May 21 was attended by newly-elected MLAs, former MLAs, MPs and senior leaders and the meeting had already started when Majumdar arrived late by about 30 minutes.
The letter said that when Gaurav Gogoi questioned him about the delay, Majumdar responded in a loud voice and in a disrespectful manner, thereby disrupting the meeting and violating party discipline.
Congress MLAs also alleged that the incident has damaged the party’s image after the recent assembly elections and demanded appropriate disciplinary action from the Indian Youth Congress leadership.
This letter has come at a time when the ongoing conflict between Gaurav Gogoi and Majumdar is exposing the deep factionalism within the Assam Congress.
According to some other Congress leaders, the controversy started when Gogoi reprimanded Majumdar for coming late to a meeting.
It was reported that the debate escalated when the Youth Congress chief questioned Gogoi on ‘double standards’ in the party and said that he was not interrupted like other senior leaders when they came late.
According to Congress sources, differences between the two leaders have been increasing for a long time regarding organizational appointments and decision making. These differences increased further after the recent by-elections, with Majumdar being kept away from organizational responsibilities despite his good performance.
Following the public controversy, the Congress high command has constituted a one-member committee to investigate the controversy and suggest steps to restore discipline in the Assam Congress unit.
