Guwahati, July 7 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said drugs worth more than Rs 3,253 crore have been seized and more than 26,500 accused have been arrested since 2021 as part of the state government’s ongoing anti-narcotics drive. He said that the state government will continue this campaign until the drugs network is completely destroyed.
Sharing statistics of the campaign on social media platform X, Chief Minister Sarma said that the state’s flagship initiative ‘Mission Assam Against Drugs’ has yielded decisive results in the last five years.
He wrote, “Our continuous fight against drugs is yielding decisive results. Under ‘Mission Assam Against Drugs’, drugs worth more than Rs 3,253 crore have been seized since 2021 and more than 26,500 criminals have been arrested. This campaign will continue till the drugs network is completely dismantled.”
According to data released by the Chief Minister’s Office, 26,537 people have been arrested in drug-related cases since the start of the campaign in 2021. Narcotics with an estimated market value of Rs 3,253 crore have been recovered during the same period.
According to the data, a continuous increase has been recorded in the action. In the year 2021, 4,175 people were arrested in drug-related cases, while in 2025 this number increased to 4,901. Similarly, the market value of seized narcotics was Rs 383.64 crore in 2021, which increased to Rs 473.46 crore in 2025.
After assuming power in the year 2021, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Assam government has intensified the campaign against drugs. Assam Police and other law enforcement agencies are conducting regular raids across the state.
Hundreds of kilograms of heroin, methamphetamine pills, ganja and other narcotics have been seized during these operations. Action has been intensified especially on interstate and international smuggling routes.
The state government says Assam’s geographical location makes it vulnerable to drug trafficking due to international drug smuggling routes linked to the Golden Triangle region. For this reason, intelligence based operations and strict enforcement are being continued.
Officials said that further action will be taken to dismantle organized drugs syndicates, strengthen surveillance in border areas and crackdown on smuggling networks operating through the North-East.
